Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s 3-run HR lifts D-backs over Cards
Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a tiebreaking three-run homer to power the Arizona Diamondbacks past the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday.

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson (1-2) held the Cardinals to one run on seven hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Reliever Kevin Ginkel tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save.

Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Gibson (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in six innings.

Nelson dodged danger in the first. Paul Goldschmidt hit a single and reached third base with two outs on a wild pitch and catcher Gabriel Moreno's throwing error.

But Nelson got Nolan Arenado to fly out to strand Goldschmidt.

The Diamondbacks moved ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the inning. Ketel Marte hit a double and took third on a single by Gurriel. After Chrisian Walker walked to load the bases, Joc Pederson hit a sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals tied the game 1-1 in the fifth. Jordan Walker hit a triple and scored on Masyn Winn's single.

Nelson escaped another jam in the sixth after Goldchmidt singled and Nolan Gorman followed with a ground-rule double. Goldschmidt was thrown out trying to score on an Arenado grounder, then Willson Contreras lined out.

After walking Lars Nootbaar intentionally to load the bases, Nelson struck out Walker.

Arizona took a 4-1 in the bottom of the inning. Marte hit a double, Corbin Carroll walked and Gurriel hit his three-run shot, his fourth homer of the season. After Walker walked and Pederson hit a single, Eugenio Suarez grounded into a forceout and Moreno hit into a double play.

Winn hit a leadoff single in the seventh and Brendan Donovan notched a one-out single before Goldschmidt lined into an inning-ending double play.

The Cardinals cut Arizona's lead to 4-2 in the eighth on singles by Arenado, Contreras and Nootbaar.
