Blue Jays Nation’s Mid-Season Prospect Countdown – No. 40: Nick Goodwin
Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Another day, another article where we look at a 2023 draftee.

Just a quick recap of the mid-season list: We’ll look at the players stats, my observations, and finally other publications (Prospects Live, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America) scouting reports.

In this article, we’ll at 2023 draft pick Nick Goodwin.

Getting to know Nick Goodwin…

Position: Shortstop/Second base/Third base

Bats: Right

Born: September 6, 2001

Acquired: 7th round, 2023 MLB Draft (Blue Jays)

Current Team: Single-A Dunedin

Previous Ranking: Not ranked

Like all new draftees, Goodwin’s stats in affiliate baseball are limited. So far with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, he’s slashing .194/.286/.258 with no homers, but two doubles in 35 plate appearances. Moreover, he has a 5.7 BB% and a 20 K%.

For his collegiate career with Kansas State University, he slashed .273/.369/.505 with 33 homers in 770 plate appearances, along with an 11.2 BB% and an 18.4 K% in his three seasons with the Big-12 school.

The 21-year-old infielder ranked as MLB Pipeline’s 163rd best draft prospect (he was chosen 214th). Some notable points from that scouting report is that he’s a power-over-hit guy that does a good job pulling the ball. He also works the count well, but can be more picky at what he puts into play.

He has an average arm and fringe-average speed. Goodwin more than likely will move to second base or be a utility player in the future.

With most new draftees, it’s hard to pin their ceiling so early in their professional career. He can hit for power, but he may end up moving around the infield in a utility role sooner rather than later.

Next up:

Goodwin was not only the last player ranked in the 40s, but is the last position player in the streak of six. Next up will feature a young pitcher.
