LSU QB appears ready to carry Jayden Daniels' Heisman torch with perfect spring game

Is LSU the next QBU?

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier appears ready to fill the shoes left by 2023 Heisman winner Jayden Daniels after going a perfect 7-of-7 for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers' spring game.

His best throw of the day came on his first touchdown when he stepped up into the pocket and threw a deep ball on the run to wide receiver Zavion Thomas.

Nussmeier's second score came on a 50-yard bomb to wideout Kyren Lacy, whom The Advocate's Wilson Alexander pointed out earlier this month as having a sensational spring.

Last season, Daniels became the second LSU quarterback in five seasons to win a Heisman Trophy, following Joe Burrow, who became LSU's first Heisman winner since Billy Cannon (1959) in 2019.

Garrett Nussmeier, the son of former NFL quarterback Doug Nussmeier, also performed well in LSU's 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl appearance against Wisconsin.

He started for Daniels and received the game's MVP honor after going 31-of-45 for 395 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the 35-31 win.

Garrett Nussmeier was a four-star recruit out of high school in the 2021 recruiting class, which also included USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye, and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy. Per 247Sports, he ranked as the 19th-best quarterback that year.

With his excellent performance in LSU's spring game, Garrett Nussmeier's confidence should only continue to grow. He could very well become the next great quarterback for a program that's quickly becoming a hub for players at his position.
